Vauxhall Astra Keys: Types & What You Need
The Astra has run through two very different worlds — General Motors, then Stellantis. Telling us the generation (or your reg) means we arrive with exactly the right blank, chip and software:
Astra H (2004–2010) & Astra J (2009–2015) — GM
- Blade: HU100R internal-cut laser blade.
- Transponder: Megamos-family chip on the Astra H, moving to Philips/NXP Hitag2 (ID46) on the Astra J.
- Remote: fixed-head remote or flip (switchblade) key; the flip-switch spring is a known wear point we can re-shell.
Astra K (2015–2021) — GM, last of the GM Astras
- Key: HU100R flip key with a Hitag2 transponder; keyless proximity entry offered on higher trims (Elite Nav) [verify against your VIN].
- All-keys-lost: programmed by OBD at the roadside.
Astra L (2022–present) — PSA/Stellantis platform
- Underneath: the current Astra shares the Stellantis EMP2 platform with the Peugeot 308 — so it uses their HU83 / VA2 key system, not a GM one.
- Key: HU83 blade with a Hitag AES chip; flip remote and keyless proximity depending on trim, including the plug-in hybrid and all-electric Astra Electric.
Note: the GM-to-Stellantis change lands at the Astra L in 2022, and keyless availability on the Astra K varies by trim [verify against your VIN]. Give us the reg and we will confirm the exact key type before we come out.

Why does my Vauxhall Astra flip key keep failing?
It is a common Astra fault. The flip (switchblade) key has a small spring and micro-switches that wear out, so the blade stops springing out or the buttons stop working. We can re-shell the key and transfer your existing electronics and blade — much cheaper than a brand-new coded key.
How do I know if my Astra is a GM or a Stellantis car?
By the year. An Astra H, J or K (up to 2021) is a General Motors car using an HU100R key; the Astra L, from 2022, is built on the Stellantis platform and uses an HU83 key shared with the Peugeot 308.
