Vauxhall Astra Key Fob Not Working? Causes and Fixes

A Vauxhall Astra fob that has stopped working is annoying, but it is rarely the disaster it feels like. Most “dead fob” call-outs turn out to be a cheap fix, not a new key — so before you assume the worst (or pay a dealer for a replacement you may not need), it is worth knowing what actually goes wrong on the Astra and how each fault is put right.
Here are the common causes, roughly in the order we see them, and what each one really means.
First, rule out the battery — it is nearly always this
A flat coin cell is by far the most common cause of an Astra fob going quiet. The tell-tale sign: the remote buttons do nothing or only work up close, but the key still turns the ignition and the car still starts. On an Astra H, J and K the battery is usually a CR2032 [the exact cell varies by fob type and year], and swapping it is a two-minute job with a small screwdriver. If the buttons come back to life, that was your whole problem.
Because the Astra H (2004–2010) and Astra J (2009–2015) use a bladed key, a flat remote battery never leaves you stranded — you can still unlock and start mechanically. On a keyless Astra K (2015–2021) you can still start the car by holding the fob against the marked spot and pressing start, and get in with the emergency blade hidden in the fob.
Worn buttons, micro-switches and the flip spring
Astra flip (switchblade) keys take a lot of daily abuse. Two things wear out: the rubber buttons and micro-switches underneath (so a press no longer registers), and the flip spring itself (so the blade will not snap out or fold back in). Neither means the key is dead. In most cases we can re-shell the key and replacement the housing, transferring your existing electronics and blade — far cheaper than a brand-new coded key.
Water damage, a cracked case, or a snapped blade
- A cracked case lets moisture in and corrodes the board — sometimes recoverable, sometimes not.
- A blade that has snapped in the door or ignition is a different problem — see our broken key extraction service; we remove the broken piece without damaging the barrel and cut a fresh blade.
Lost synchronisation after a battery change
Occasionally a fob falls out of sync with the car — often right after a battery swap or a flat vehicle battery. Many Astras re-sync simply by turning the ignition on, or by pressing lock/unlock a set number of times near the car. If it will not re-pair, the remote may need re-programming, which we do through the diagnostic port.
Remote versus transponder — the distinction that matters
A failing remote (lock and unlock buttons) is not the same as a failing immobiliser transponder. If the buttons are dead but the car still starts, that is a remote issue. If the car cranks but will not start even with the key in the ignition, that points at the immobiliser or the transponder chip, not the remote — a different diagnosis entirely. Every Astra from the H to the K uses a Hitag2-family chip and the HU100R blade on GM-era cars; the Astra L (2022 on) switches to the Stellantis platform with a different key system [verify against your VIN].
When it really is a new key or fob
Genuine transponder failure is rare. If a fresh battery, a re-shell and a re-sync all draw a blank, we can test the fob and, if needed, cut and programme a new one to your Astra at the roadside — no dealer trip.
