A main dealer will typically want the car recovered (a SEAT with no coded key is immobilised), an appointment days away, and a bill stacking the key, the programming and the transport together. A general locksmith usually cannot help: since the MQB platform arrived, SEAT keys carry component security — Volkswagen Group calls it Komponentenschutz — so a blank that has not been married to your exact car with dealer-level data will open the door but never start the engine. It is genuinely not a cheap copy.

Seat Key Systems Explained
SEAT’s line-up quietly split in two: the sporty models became Cupra — now a separate marque in its own right — while SEAT itself covers the small cars and family SUVs. The keys are pure Volkswagen Group underneath, but which MQB variant your SEAT uses decides whether it’s a quick roadside job or a dealer-level one:
The blade: HU66
- Almost every modern SEAT uses the HU66 internal-cut blade (newer cars use a higher-security HU66 variant), cut on a Lishi HU66. A worn flip-key spring is the everyday SEAT repair — we re-shell and transfer the electronics rather than sell a whole new coded key.
Two MQB variants: small-car vs full
- Ibiza (6F, 2017-on) and Arona (2017-on): sit on MQB-A0, the small-car version of the platform, with IMMO5 component protection (Komponentenschutz) and Megamos AES / Hitag AES chips.
- Leon (from 2013), Ateca (2016-on) and the seven-seat Tarraco (2018-on): use the full MQB platform — the same component-security method, so a new key needs dealer-level immo access a generic cutter can’t provide.
- Pre-MQB SEAT (older Leon Mk2, Ibiza 6J): Megamos/Hitag2 (ID48), OBD-programmable at the roadside — the straightforward VAG job.
FR, Cupra and keyless
- FR trims: SEAT’s sporty FR grade usually adds KESSY keyless-go — a proximity smart key that follows the same all-keys-lost path as any keyless MQB car.
- The Cupra split: the old Leon Cupra hot hatch is now a separate marque (Cupra Leon, Formentor, Ateca), but the key architecture is identical VAG tech — so we key a Cupra exactly as we would the SEAT it grew from.
- All-keys-lost: with every key gone we need the full security/component data, so it takes longer than a spare — but we still handle the vast majority at the roadside.
