Spare & fleet keysRegain Entry Into Your Ford Transit Custom
A Ford Transit Custom off the road is money walking out the door. The Custom is Britain’s best-selling van, and for a sole trader or a fleet it is the business — so a lost, stolen or snapped key does not just cost a key, it costs the job, the delivery and the day’s work.
The dealer route is the worst of all worlds for a working van: recovery to the branch, an appointment that suits them not you, and a bill that includes the key, the coding and the transport while your Custom sits idle. A general locksmith cannot programme the van at all — the Transit Custom runs Ford’s PATS immobiliser, so an uncoded key is useless.
Lock City is a mobile van locksmith that comes to your yard, depot or the roadside. We cut the HU101 blade, code the key to your immobiliser on-site and get you moving — no towing, no lost day. We also handle deadlock issues and fleet spare keys so a single failure never takes a van off the road. Call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.
Ford Transit Custom Keys: Types & What You Need
The Transit Custom shares the Transit family’s HU101 platform, but the newer generation moves things on. Knowing which you run tells us the key, chip and software to bring:
Transit Custom Gen 1 (2012–2023)
- Blade: HU101 high-security laser blade.
- Key: HU101 flip (switchblade) remote with an ID63 / Hitag Pro transponder; keyless smart entry on later Limited and Sport trims.
- Common jobs: worn flip blades, snapped keys in cold weather, and immobiliser faults where the van cranks but will not start (the “no-start” our Ford Custom case study covers).
- All-keys-lost: programmed by OBD at the roadside; deadlocks can complicate access after a break-in.
Transit Custom Gen 2 (2023–present)
- Platform: all-new van (co-developed with Volkswagen); keyless smart entry far more common.
- Security: newer, more secure key architecture — a strong argument for keeping a programmed spare, and for anti-theft measures given how heavily vans are targeted.
Note: exact security details on the 2023-on Gen 2 vary and are still bedding in [verify against your VIN]. Our Ford PATS immobiliser guide and the Ford Custom no-start case study both bridge to real Custom jobs we have done.

Ford Transit Custom Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
How fast can you get my Transit Custom back on the road?
We prioritise vans because we know an off-road Custom is lost income. In most cases we cut and programme a key at your location in a single visit, with no recovery to a dealer. See our van locksmith solutions.
Can you come to my yard or depot to key a fleet of Transit Customs?
Yes. We regularly attend yards, depots and sites to cut and programme spare or replacement keys across multiple vans in one visit. It is the cheapest way to make sure no single lost key ever strands a van. See our replacement van keys service.
My Transit Custom cranks but won’t start — is it the key?
It can be. A de-synced transponder or a PATS immobiliser fault will let the van crank but not fire, which people often mistake for an engine problem. We diagnose the immobiliser and re-code the key on-site. Our Ford Custom case study is a real example.
Do you handle keyless Transit Customs and the new 2023 model?
Yes. We programme keyless smart entry on later Gen 1 Limited and Sport vans, and we keep our software current for the all-new 2023-on Transit Custom. Give us the reg and we will confirm the key type before we travel.
Can you get into a Transit Custom with a deadlock after a break-in?
Yes. Deadlocks make forced entry harder, which is exactly why they are fitted — but we use non-destructive methods to gain entry and can then cut and code a new key. If the van was broken into, see our stolen keys and broken key services too.
