Lost your Ford Puma key or keyless fob? The Puma has quickly become one of Britain’s most popular cars — and one of the most frustrating to be locked out of, because it is a modern, keyless-first vehicle where the old “pop to a key cutter” fix simply does not apply.
A dealer will typically want the car recovered, a booking that could be days out, and a bill covering the smart fob, the coding and the transport. A general locksmith usually cannot touch it: the Puma is new enough that it needs current software and the correct Hitag Pro smart-key blanks, which most do not carry. Older tooling will not authenticate to the car.
Lock City keeps its Ford software and stock up to date specifically for cars like the Puma. We come to you, supply the right smart key or flip key, and code it to your immobiliser at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait, fully guaranteed. Book Puma key programming or a replacement key on 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.
Ford Puma Keys: Types & What You Need
The Puma launched in 2019, so its key system is entirely modern — which is exactly why up-to-date software matters more here than on an older Ford:
Puma (2019–present)
- Blade: HU101 emergency blade hidden inside the fob (for the door, if the battery dies).
- Key: flip remote on entry trims; keyless smart proximity (KeyFree) is common and standard on ST-Line, ST-Line X and Vignale.
- Transponder: Hitag Pro (ID49 / AES) secure chip.
- Powertrain: mild-hybrid (mHEV) petrol and the Puma ST — all share the same key system.
- All-keys-lost: roadside-programmable, but only with the latest software; keyless AKL takes longer than adding a spare.
What we see most on the Puma
- One-key households: many Pumas were sold with a single smart fob, so a lost key is instantly an all-keys-lost.
- Flat fob batteries mistaken for a failed key — often just a CR2032 swap plus the emergency-blade start procedure.
Note: as one of the newer Fords, exact chip revisions can vary by build date [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm the software and blank needed before we set off. See our Ford key fob programming guide for the basics.

Ford Puma Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
Can you really programme a new Ford Puma key — it’s a new car?
Yes. We keep our Ford software and smart-key stock current specifically for recent models like the Puma. We can programme keyless smart fobs and flip keys to a 2019-onwards Puma at the roadside, including all-keys-lost.
My Puma came with only one key — should I get a spare?
Strongly recommended. Many Pumas were delivered with a single smart fob, which means losing it turns a simple spare-cut into a costlier all-keys-lost job. A programmed spare now is cheaper and saves you being stranded later. See our spare key service.
My Puma won’t detect the key — is the fob dead?
Often it is just a flat CR2032 battery in the smart fob. You can usually still start the car by holding the fob against the marked spot and using the start button, and get in with the hidden emergency blade. If a new battery does not fix it, we can test and, if needed, replace the fob.
How much does a keyless Puma smart key cost to replace?
A keyless Puma smart fob sits in the higher price tier because the part is more expensive and the programming takes longer than a basic flip key. Send us your registration and we will confirm the exact cost before we travel.
Is the keyless Puma at risk of relay theft?
Like any keyless car, yes — so keep the fob in a Faraday pouch and the spare away from the front of the house. If a keyless fob is lost or stolen, we can programme a new one and disable the old. Read our Ford theft-prevention guide.
