Spare & fleet keysRegain Entry Into Your Renault Trafic
A Renault Trafic off the road is money walking out the door. For a sole trader or a fleet the Trafic is the business — so a lost, stolen or snapped key does not just cost a key, it costs the delivery, the job and the day’s work.
A main dealer will want the Trafic recovered to the branch, an appointment that suits them not you, and a bill stacking the key, the programming and the transport while the van sits idle. A general locksmith cannot programme it either — the Trafic runs a Renault Hitag AES immobiliser, so an uncoded key will open a door but never start the engine. You need make-specific key-system expertise.
Lock City is a mobile van locksmith that comes to your yard, depot or the roadside with dealer-level Renault software and the correct Hitag AES keys. We cut and code the key to your immobiliser on-site — no towing, no dealer wait — and every replacement van key job is guaranteed. Call 07967 097 899, Mon–Fri 8am–5:30pm.
Renault Trafic Keys: Types & What You Need
Knowing which Trafic you run tells us the exact key, chip and software the job needs — and whether it is a quick spare or a full all-keys-lost. Here is the real breakdown by generation:
Trafic X82 (2014–present)
- Blade: Renault high-security laser blade (HU platform) integrated into a flip / fixed remote key.
- Transponder: Hitag AES secure chip — a modern, encrypted system, not a clone-and-go key.
- Remote: plip remote (lock / unlock / load-area) coded to the UCH body computer.
- All-keys-lost: programmable by OBD at the roadside with dealer-level software; AKL may need the security code drawn from the vehicle.
Earlier Trafic (2001–2014)
- Key: earlier Renault blade + transponder / plip; simpler Hitag2-era immobiliser on the oldest vans.
Shared-platform sibling note
The Trafic is a Renault–Nissan alliance van. The pre-2019 Vauxhall Vivaro and the Nissan Primastar are the same vehicle under different badges, sharing the Trafic’s Renault key and Hitag AES immobiliser system. (Note: the 2019-on Vivaro switched to the Stellantis/Peugeot platform, so its key differs — tell us the year.)
Note: exact chip revision and whether AKL needs a security code vary by build date [verify against your VIN]. Tell us your reg and we will confirm the key type before we set off.
The Renault Trafic at a glance
The Trafic (X82, 2014 on) is Renault’s mid-size panel van and the donor for the Nissan Primastar and, earlier, the Vauxhall Vivaro and Nissan NV300. It uses a Renault flip key, with keyless creeping onto later, higher-spec vans.
- Blade: Renault VA2-profile flip key; some late vans add keyless [verify against your VIN].
- A single-key working van is a breakdown waiting to happen — a coded spare keeps the fleet moving.
The Trafic scenarios we see
Trafics arrive as trades and delivery vans piling on the miles, where the flip key has worn out or been lost on site. Vivaro and NV300 siblings turn up too, and owners want the cheapest reliable route back to two working keys.
- Flip key lost on a building site.
- Trades van worn down to one key.
- Vivaro/NV300 sibling needing the same fix.

Depending on the generation and trim, the Renault Trafic Van is fitted with the bladed transponder key, remote key with a separate blade and the flip (switchblade) remote key. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.

Renault Trafic Van Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered
How fast can you get my Renault Trafic back on the road?
We prioritise vans because we know an off-road Trafic is lost income. In most cases we cut and programme a key at your location in a single visit, with no recovery to a dealer. See our van locksmith solutions.
Can you programme a Trafic key at the roadside, or must it go to Renault?
At the roadside. We carry dealer-level Renault software and the correct Hitag AES keys, so the vast majority of Trafics are cut and coded on-site by OBD — including all-keys-lost — without recovering the van to a dealer.
My Trafic is the same as a Vivaro or Primastar — does that help?
It does. The Trafic, the pre-2019 Vauxhall Vivaro and the Nissan Primastar share the same Renault key system, so we bring the same tooling. Just confirm the year, because the 2019-on Vivaro moved to a different platform.
Can you come to my yard or depot to key a fleet of Trafics?
Yes. We regularly attend yards, depots and sites to cut and programme spare or replacement keys across multiple vans in one visit — the cheapest way to make sure no single lost key strands a van. See our replacement van keys service.
I’ve lost every key to my Trafic — can you still help?
Yes. All-keys-lost is a common Trafic job: we generate and code a fresh key to your immobiliser at the roadside, so you are not paying for recovery. See our lost van keys service.
