Regain Entry Into Your Hyundai Tucson

Lost your Hyundai Tucson key, or had a keyless fob stolen? On a family SUV that does the school run, the shopping and the weekend away, an immobilised Tucson brings the whole household to a stop — and a modern keyless Tucson is not a job for a high-street key cutter.

Take the Tucson to a main dealer and you are usually looking at recovering the car (it is immobilised without a coded key), an appointment days away, and a bill that stacks the fob, the programming and the transport together. A general locksmith cannot programme it either: the Tucson runs the Hyundai immobiliser, and an all-keys-lost job normally needs the vehicle’s security code (PIN) before a fresh key will start the engine.

Lock City is a mobile auto locksmith with the dealer-level software and the correct HY-series blanks and smart-key fobs for the Tucson. We come to you, cut the blade, retrieve the security code and code the key to your immobiliser at the roadside — no towing, no dealer wait. Every Tucson key replacement and key programming job is guaranteed. Call 07967 097 899, Monday to Friday, 8am–5:30pm.

Know Your Key

Hyundai Tucson Keys: Types & What You Need

The Tucson has run through three very different key generations, and Hyundai shares this key and immobiliser architecture with Kia across Hyundai Motor Group — so the generation, not the badge, decides the job. Tell us the year (or your reg) and we arrive with the right blade, chip and software:

Tucson / ix35 (2009–2015)

  • Blade: HY-series laser blade (commonly HY18/HY22).
  • Transponder: Philips/NXP ID46 (Hitag2) on the flip remote; a plain blade-and-transponder key on base trims.
  • All-keys-lost: programmed by OBD once the immobiliser security code is retrieved.

Tucson TL (2015–2020)

  • Key: HY-series folding flip remote as standard; keyless smart proximity (Smart Key) on Premium and Premium SE trims.
  • Security: ID46/secure transponder; the keyless system is a relay-theft target on higher trims.

Tucson NX4 (2021–present)

  • Key: keyless smart proximity standard on most trims, with a hidden emergency blade in the fob.
  • Variants: petrol, mild-hybrid, full hybrid and plug-in hybrid — all share the same smart-key system.
  • All-keys-lost: roadside-programmable with current software and the security code; the newest fobs can take longer.

Note: the exact flip-to-keyless cut-over depends on the specific trim and build date [verify against your VIN]. Give us your reg and we will confirm the key type and whether a security code is needed before we come out.

Which key does a Hyundai Tucson use?

Depending on the generation and trim, the Hyundai Tucson is fitted with the bladed transponder key, flip (switchblade) remote key and the smart proximity (keyless) key. Tell us your registration and we will confirm which one your vehicle carries before quoting.

  • Bladed transponder key
  • Flip (switchblade) remote key
  • Smart proximity (keyless) key
Hyundai Tucson FAQs

Hyundai Tucson Key Replacement — Your Questions Answered

My Hyundai Tucson is keyless — can you still make a new key?

Yes. The keyless Tucson (Smart Key trims of the TL, and most NX4s) uses a smart proximity fob, and we carry both the fobs and the current software to programme one to your car at the roadside, including all-keys-lost.

Do you need the immobiliser security code to replace a Tucson key?

For an all-keys-lost job, usually yes. Hyundai (like Kia) uses a security code / PIN tied to the vehicle, and we retrieve it as part of the job so a fresh key will start the engine. If you still have one working key, adding a spare is quicker and cheaper.

Does the hybrid or plug-in Tucson use a different key?

No. The mild-hybrid, full hybrid and PHEV NX4 Tucsons all use the same keyless smart-key system as the petrol version, so there is no difference in how we programme them.

My keyless Tucson fob was stolen — is the car at risk?

Potentially — a stolen smart fob can start the car, and keyless SUVs are a relay-theft target. We can programme a new fob and de-register the stolen one so it will no longer unlock or start the Tucson. See our stolen car keys service.

Can you programme an older ix35 or Tucson flip key at the roadside too?

Yes. The 2009–2020 Tucson and ix35 use an HY-series flip key with an ID46 transponder, which we cut and code on-site by OBD. Whether you have an older flip key or a new smart fob, we can sort it in one visit. See our lost car keys service.
