Honda CR-V Keys: Types & What You Need
The CR-V’s key system changed sharply with the newer models, so the generation matters for both cost and security advice:
CR-V 3rd/4th gen (2007–2018)
- Blade: HON66.
- Transponder: Philips/NXP immobiliser chip.
- Remote: a fixed-head or flip (switchblade) remote key; keyless offered on higher trims.
- All-keys-lost: programmed by OBD at the roadside.
CR-V 5th/6th gen (2018–present)
- Key: Honda Smart Keyless Access (proximity) as standard on most trims, with a hidden HON66 emergency blade.
- Variants: petrol, self-charging hybrid and (6th gen) plug-in hybrid — all use the same smart-key architecture.
- Security: the keyless system is a relay-theft target. We recommend a Faraday pouch, keeping the spare away from the front door, and re-coding after any theft so the old fob is dead.

My Honda CR-V is keyless — can you still make a new key?

My keyless CR-V fob was stolen — is the car at risk?

Does the hybrid CR-V use a different key?
No — the self-charging and plug-in hybrid CR-Vs use the same Keyless Access smart-key system as the petrol version, so there is no difference in how we programme it. If you have lost the key to a hybrid, we treat it exactly like any other newer CR-V.
How can I stop my keyless CR-V being stolen?
Keep the fob in a Faraday (signal-blocking) pouch, store the spare away from doors and windows, and consider an aftermarket immobiliser. After any theft or lost keyless fob, have the key re-coded so the missing one is disabled.
