Renault Keycard Battery Replacement (Clio, Megane, Captur, Scenic, Zoe)

A flat keycard battery is the most common reason a Renault stops reading its card — and one of the cheapest to fix. Before you book a locksmith or a dealer, it is worth trying a new coin-cell yourself, because a fresh battery restores the hands-free function and clears most “card not detected” warnings. Here is how to do it on the Clio, Megane, Captur, Scenic and Zoe, and how to keep driving until you can.
The signs your card battery is going flat
- The car stops unlocking as you walk up to it — you have to press the button, then eventually that stops too.
- The hands-free range drops: you have to be right next to the door, or hold the card to the reader.
- The dash warns “card not detected”, “insert card” or shows a low-key-battery symbol.
- It is worse in cold weather (coin-cells lose voltage when cold).
If your card is failing intermittently or only when pushed into the slot, the card itself may be worn rather than just flat — our keycard not recognised guide explains how to tell the difference.
Which battery does a Renault keycard take?
Most Renault hands-free keycards use a CR2025 or CR1620 coin-cell, depending on the model and card generation. They are inexpensive and sold in any supermarket or hardware shop. The safest way to be certain is to open the card and read the marking on the old cell before you buy — the number is printed on the flat face of the battery. Do not force a CR2025 into a slot made for a thinner CR1620 or vice versa.
How to open the card and swap the battery
- Slide out the emergency blade if your card has one (usually a small catch on the side) — this often exposes the case seam.
- Find the seam around the edge of the card and gently prise the two halves apart with a small flat tool or a coin. Take your time; the plastic clips are delicate.
- Note which way up the old battery sits (which side faces up), then lift it out.
- Drop the new cell in the same orientation, avoiding touching both faces with your fingers.
- Clip the case back together, refit the blade, and test: the card should unlock the car hands-free again.
If the warning does not clear after a fresh, correctly-fitted battery, the card is likely worn or has lost sync with the car — both are things we fix at the roadside, and neither always means a brand-new card.
How to start a Renault when the card is flat
This is the part that panics people — but every hands-free Renault has a backup. If the card battery is dead, you can usually still start the car by holding the card flat against a specific spot in the cabin (often the steering column, the card reader slot, or a marked area near the start button — check your handbook for the exact location on your model), then pressing the start button with your foot on the brake or clutch. The car reads the card’s chip directly at close range, bypassing the flat battery, and lets you drive home. To get into the car in the first place, use the emergency blade hidden inside the card in the door lock.
Model notes
- Clio, Captur, Zoe: card-style hands-free key across recent generations; the emergency blade lives inside the card.
- Megane, Scenic: the classic Renault keycard — earlier “flip-out blade” cards and later flat cards both take a coin-cell.
- Zoe (EV): uses the same keycard architecture as the petrol cars, so battery replacement and the flat-card start work the same way.
Note: the exact coin-cell size and the flat-card start location vary by model, generation and trim [verify against your handbook or your VIN]. If in doubt, tell us your registration and we will confirm before doing anything.
When to call us instead
If a new battery does not fix it, if the card is cracked or water-damaged, or if you would simply rather not risk snapping the case, we replace keycard batteries and diagnose worn cards on-site as part of our Renault key and keycard replacement and keycard programming service. We cover the Clio, Megane, Captur, Scenic and Zoe across Bristol, Bath and South Gloucestershire. And if the card is genuinely lost rather than flat, that is an all-keys-lost job we also handle at the roadside. Call 07967 097 899, Monday to Friday, 8am–5:30pm.
