Can I unlock my Ford Transit van if the battery is dead?

In most cases, a dead battery will not affect the ability to unlock your van. However, if the key fob is not working due to a dead battery, we can still get you back into your van.

Is it the key fob battery or the van battery?

They are two different problems with two different fixes, so it is worth checking which one you have:

• Key fob battery flat: the buttons on the fob do nothing, but the van itself has power. The interior light and dashboard come on when you open the door.
• Van battery flat: nothing happens at all. No interior light, no dash, and the central locking does not respond to the fob or the button inside.

How to get into your Transit with a dead battery

Every Ford Transit has a mechanical lock on the driver’s door, and that is your way in when the electrics are not working:

• Flip key: fold the blade out and unlock the driver’s door with it, as you would an older van.
• Keyless (smart) fob: a small emergency key blade is hidden inside the fob. Slide it out and use it in the driver’s door lock.
• Deadlocks: add-on deadlocks work with their own key and do not depend on the van’s battery, so they open as normal.

With a flat van battery the central locking cannot work, so the key opens the driver’s door only. The side and rear doors stay locked until the van has power again.

If the key fob battery is flat

Transit key fobs take a CR2032 coin battery, which is a quick and cheap swap. On a keyless Transit you can still start the van with a flat fob: hold it at the emergency start position (your handbook shows where), and the van reads the chip in the fob without needing the battery. If the van battery is flat

Once the battery is charged, jump-started or replaced, the central locking comes back. Occasionally the immobiliser does not recognise the key straight away after a battery change or a jump start: the van cranks but will not fire, or the dash shows “immobiliser active”. When to call a locksmith

• The key will not turn in the driver’s door lock. Older Tibbe keys wear down and stop turning, and locks can seize.
• The emergency blade is missing from your smart fob, or you have no key at all.
• The van has power again, but the immobiliser still will not accept the key.
